found in these essential traits. nStewardship. As a family-owned busi- ness, the leadership of the third genera- tion solidly grounds the company. The organization continues to operate from its headquarters in the small town of
Guilford, Maine. nStability. The organization originated in 1919 as The Minto Toothpick & Spe- cialty Company, manufacturing a sin- gle product: mint-flavored toothpicks. Soon after, the founders recognized an opportunity to expand into other mar- kets. The name changed to Hardwood Products Co. and Puritan brand was created. Puritan has since evolved into a global manufacturer of single-use products for diagnostics, forensics and genetics, environmental, medical, and controlled environments. Its product line consists of more than 1,200 unique devices, including tongue depressors, swabs, specimen transport systems, molecular media, and environmental sampling products. Throughout the years, dedication to quality—the company’s heartbeat from conception—remained strong. Today, Puritan’s unfaltering commit- ment to quality is seen in every step of manufacture from management of raw materials to labeling, all closely monitored through the combination of rigorous process and leading-edge

Puritan’s line has developed with the times, growing steadily over the years. Today, Puritan’s R&D team, with input from industry’s innovators, delivers single-use devices that meet the needs of today’s rapidly changing technolo- gies. Puritan products are no longer limited to traditional healthcare—they now serve to facilitate global initiatives in clinical microbiology, environmen- tal security, genomics, and research in every area of investigation. Puritan’s 806-WC has long been the gold standard of basic cotton tipped applicators for use in basic patient care and industry. Spun rayon, polyester, and calcium alginate fibers were added in subsequent years to complete this line of tipped applicators. In 1987, the technology to produce foam tipped applicators was brought online at Puritan. The foam tips, ini- tially intended for controlled environ- ments, found acceptance in specimen collection and remain there today. Puritan flocked swab technology was developed in 2012. Puritan’s engi- neering staff approached the flock swab in a new way, utilizing poly- ester fibers of differing lengths, and
fabricating the swab through a propri- etary technique. The result—Puritan’s patented PurFlock Ultra® Flock®
and Hydra- swabs. These offer ultimate col-
lection and release properties. Not only in rapid POCT and research, Puritan’s flock swabs are used in forensic and crime scene investigations.
Dry transport configurations are available for most of the tipped appli- cators Puritan manufacturers. Trans- port media devices became an impor- tant member of the Puritan line in 2011, when Puritans’ new lab began formu- lating and filling Liquid Amies and UTM, complete with a Puritan swab for specimen collection and trans- port. These became our Opti-Swab® and Uni-Tranz®
devices. Other media
followed. We were not done there—PurSafe® molecular preservation solution is now available, intended for research use only and proven to be a reliable trans- port for cellular transport. What’s next?
